OFFICER HARRIS:
Evening. Everything alright here?
MAYA:
Yeah, we’re good. Just grabbing dinner.
JAYDEN:
Is there a problem, officer?
OFFICER HARRIS:
(Glances between them)
You sure you’re safe, miss?
MAYA:
(Surprised)
Safe? Yes. Why wouldn’t I be?
OFFICER HARRIS:
Just saying… you never know. Sometimes girls think they’re in love, and next thing you know, they’re in the trunk of a car.
JAYDEN:
(Sharp)
Excuse me?
MAYA:
(Steps forward)
Did you just imply he’d hurt me? That he’d kidnap me?
OFFICER HARRIS:
Look, I’ve seen things. It’s not personal. Just being cautious.
JAYDEN:
No, you’re being racist. That’s what you’re being.
MAYA:
We’re two people getting dinner. And he is the one making me feel unsafe right now.
OFFICER HARRIS:
Alright, no need to get upset.
JAYDEN:
We’re upset because you’re assuming I’m dangerous because of the color of my skin.
MAYA:
(Coldly)
You don’t get to police who I love.
(Officer Harris lingers a moment, then scoffs and walks back to his cruiser. They watch as he drives off.)
JAYDEN:
You okay?
MAYA:
Yeah. Just mad. And proud. I’ve got your back.
JAYDEN:
Always?
MAYA:
Always.
(They hold hands and walk off together into the night.)
