MRS. WALTERS:
Three dollars? For one chocolate bar?
TYLER:
Yes, ma’am. It’s for charity. I’m raising money for the children’s hospital downtown.
MRS. WALTERS:
(Putting her hands on her hips)
I can buy the same bar inside for a dollar. Are you trying to scam people?
TYLER:
(Kindly)
No, ma’am. The extra money goes to help sick kids. We’re not keeping any of it.
MRS. WALTERS:
Sounds like emotional manipulation to me.
TYLER:
(Still polite, but firm)
We’re just trying to do something good. Nobody has to buy one. Some people just want to help.
MRS. WALTERS:
Well, I think it’s dishonest. Making people feel guilty so you can overcharge.
(A MAN nearby overhears. He steps in.)
MAN:
Ma’am, I just bought three. Happily. Because it’s for kids with cancer. Not for profit. Maybe try supporting that instead of tearing it down.
MRS. WALTERS:
(Huffs)
I’m entitled to my opinion.
TYLER:
Yes, ma’am. And I’m entitled to believe that kindness costs more than a dollar.
(She glares at him for a moment, then storms off. The man gives Tyler a thumbs up.)
MAN:
Keep doing what you’re doing, kid.
TYLER:
Thanks. Want a fourth bar?
(They both laugh. Tyler goes back to selling, undeterred.)
