Kevin Carter took this photo during the famine in southern Sudan in 1993.

A vulture waits for the little girl to die of hunger so it can pounce on her and devour her. His photograph won important awards and the media invited him to many shows, due to the deeply human scene it portrayed.

A viewer on a television channel asked him,
“But the little girl? What happened to her?”
Kevin replied: “I didn’t wait to find out what happened next, as I had a quick flight right after the shoot.”

The caller spontaneously responded:
“Let me tell you what happened. That day, there were two vultures — one waiting for its prey, and another one with a camera.”

Kevin Carter lived in depression for a long time, traumatized by the horrors he had witnessed throughout his career as a photojournalist, capturing some of the world’s most terrible scenes — a path that ultimately led to his suicide.

“The world will not be saved by the hands of science, but by the resurrection of human conscience.”
