“The Badge Check”
Two officers stand by a patrol car with lights flashing. A man stands a few feet away — calm, but clearly not intimidated. He pulls out his phone, already recording.
MAN (firmly, but respectfully):
“I’m recording for my own safety.
Can I get both of your names and badge numbers, please?”
OFFICER 1 (arms crossed):
“Why do you need that?”
MAN (steady):
“Because I have a right to ask. That’s the law.
You’re public servants, and I’m a member of the public. So — your name and badge number, please.”
OFFICER 2 (sighs, but responds):
“Officer Daniels. Badge 1842.”
The man nods, then turns to the first officer again.
MAN:
“And you?”
OFFICER 1 (reluctantly):
“Officer Reed. 0971.”
MAN (still calm):
“Thank you. That’s all I needed.
You can’t demand respect if you won’t give it first.”
There’s a long pause. The air is tense but quiet.
OFFICER 2 (softens slightly):
“Are you okay, sir?”
MAN:
“Now I am.”
