Former Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) referred to his 11-year prison sentence for corruption as a “political prosecution,” pointing to former President Trump’s legal issues as proof of a biased justice system.
Convicted of taking bribes and serving as an agent for Egypt, Menendez became the first U.S. official to be found guilty of working for a foreign government while in office.
Outside the courthouse, Menendez stated, “President Trump was correct… this process is political and corrupt.” He did not indicate whether he would pursue a pardon from Trump.
Menendez resigned from the Senate last year after losing his position as committee chair. He is reportedly contemplating a political return, potentially as an independent.
