The night is quiet. A WOMAN (the aunt) is seen cautiously approaching the front door of her sister’s house. Her face is tense, determined. She quietly opens the door and slips inside.

NARRATOR (voiceover):
She never wanted to do this. But when her sister stole from her — and refused to pay it back — she felt betrayed. Hurt. Angry.

Inside, the little girl is asleep in her bed. The aunt gently picks her up, careful not to wake her.

NARRATOR (voiceover):
So one random night, with a heavy heart and no other choice, she took her niece.

The aunt pauses by the window, looking back toward the sister’s house one last time.

AUNT (whispering softly to the sleeping child):
I’m sorry, baby. I promise I’ll keep you safe.

She slips out into the night.
